Bespoke economiser solution for Jersey Waste

Among the States of Jersey Government’s Department of Infrastructure’s varied responsibilities is the provision of sustainable and efficient waste management facilities.

A key element of this is its Energy from Waste facility at La Collette, near St Helier on the south of the island. This relatively new site was commissioned in January 2011 and replaced the outdated incineration plant which had been at Bellozanne since 1979.

The plant at La Collette is the only large scale municipal incinerator site in Jersey. Up to 105,000 tonnes of waste per year is managed there. It is converted into electricity and exported to Jersey Electricity for distribution throughout the island’s power network to Jersey’s population of about 100,000 people. For example, the steam produced by incinerating waste is captured to drive the steam turbine at La Collette which produces up to 10MW of electricity, around 8% of Jersey’s annual usage.

This has been made possible by a bespoke solution supplied by economiser and waste heat recovery specialists Green’s, whose UK manufactured systems help companies to reduce emissions, improve efficiency and save money.

The Department for Infrastructure was looking for a new supplier of economisers and sourced tenders from a number of companies and was most impressed by Green’s proposals. Not only did they offer a competitive price, more importantly their H-fin design was more elegant and suited to the workload that producing energy from waste at La Collette would generate.

Ian Williams, manager of the Energy from Waste facility said: “Green’s stainless steel H-fin solution and its proprietary design not only provides more free air space which results in less likelihood of blockages caused by ash, but also less chance of the metal distorting and causing leaks or other issues.”

The Department for Infrastructure is so impressed with the success of Green’s solution that it has come to Greens again to supply a second system. It is in the process of being fabricated with delivery to the plant scheduled for November when Green’s installation specialists will set it up on site.

Ian Williams added: “We have been really pleased with all aspects of Green’s performance. From analysing our business and what we needed, through providing suitably robust and high performing bespoke products, to installing the system efficiently we are confident that they are a supplier that is happy to be accountable and we can trust in this vital area of our operation.”
